Dog Fouling in Hatton

Picture of an inquisitive dog

This is not the most pleasant of topics to write about, but it is one which is regularly raised by Hatton Parish Council and residents alike. New complaints are increasing. The following are the issues we face as a community in trying to keep all areas of our village free from dog fouling.

The first thing we know is that the problem increases when the dark nights arrive. The next thing we know is that there are one or two people in the village who consciously and consistently refuse to pick up after their dog. Thirdly, there are others who don’t actively watch their dog to know when and where a poo bag is required.

The complaint is not new. Hatton Parish Council, and nationally other councils, have received the same complaint for years. We, and other councils, have tried posting messages on the website, on social media and displayed posters around the village. Stencils to remind owners to pick up after their dog have been used, as has highlighting the offending piles. These measures have had some success for a while, but it is not long before the problem returns as bad as ever. Education and persuasion have been tried and been ignored, now legal action is the only option left.

The problem faced in the village, in particular on the path between Station Road and Heathway, has been reported to SDDC Clean Team. They will clean the area. If they capture dog fouling, even through CCTV and doorbell videos, they may issue a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN). They have the power to take matters to court. The situation the parish council is faced with is an impossible one to control without legal action being taken. But success requires the cooperation of everyone in reporting incidents .

Reporting can be done via the District Council website Clean Team incident report | South Derbyshire District Council.

We know the vast majority of dog owners are caring and considerate and they do clear up after their dogs, but there is a sizable minority who do not, which results in everyone else being left with the unhealthy and unpleasant results.

Given the increase in the problem, these measures are required to protect everyone and we need your support to eradicate this unpleasant form of anti social behaviour. If anyone has alternative ideas, please do get in touch.
